Bromley-by-Bow is a district in east London, in the borough of Tower Hamlets. It is between Plaistow and Limehouse, and north of Canary Warf. It has its own tube station, and is on the District and Hammersmith & City lines. It is south of the A11 and about 20 minutes away from Stratford. Bromley-by-Bow has previously been known as Brambele, Brambelegh and Brembeley. The tube station there was originally called Bromley, but this was changed in 1967 to distinguish it from stations in the borough of Bromley in south east London. Over time, the area around the station also became known as Bromley-by-Bowe. Bromley-by-Bowe has several community facilities. One is Kingsley Hall, which is a community centre in the north of the area. The centre was opened in 1923 by H. G. Wells and famously housed Gandhi for 12 weeks in 1931. The area is also home to the Bromley By Bow Community Organisation. This group runs Youth Provisions and Community Engagement programmes for the area. It also runs five football teams, which are part of its aim to promote well-being and quality of life for local residents. Bromley-by-Bowe has a number of famous past and present residents. These include the footballer Christopher Gordon and the actor Jack Warner.
