Belvedere is a district in south east London, in the London Borough of Bexley. Belvedere is between West Heath and Lessness Heath, and approximately 30 minutes away from London City Airport. Belvedere has its own train station and is approximately 10 miles north west of the Dartford Crossing. The name Belvedere originates from the Italian for ‘beautiful view’. It was given this name by Sir Culling Eardley in the mid nineteenth century when it was largely a wooded and uncultivated estate. Eardley gradually built houses and sold off land, and Belvedere village emerged. Belvedere was heavily bombed during the Blitz, but despite this it still has a large amount of Victorian and Edwardian architecture, as well as more contemporary buildings. Belvedere is divided into a number of smaller areas, including Upper Belvedere, Lower Belvedere, Nuxley Village and Bostall Heath. It has a number of independent shops, pubs and restaurants, which are mostly found in Nuxley Village. One of Belvedere’s top attractions is Lesnes Abbey, which is the ruins of an ancient abbey surrounded by park and heath land. Here there is a children’s playground and a formal flower garden that is known for its bluebells. Property prices in Belvedere are unusually low for a London district, and because of this and its good travel links it is particularly popular with young commuters. There are a number of schools in the area and the closest NHS hospitals are Queen Elizabeth in Woolwich and Queen Mary’s in Sidcup.
