Pevensey is a town and civil parish in the Wealden district of East Sussex, England. The main village lies five miles (8 kilometres) north-east of Eastbourne, one mile (1.6 km) inland from Pevensey Bay. The negotiation of Pevensey Bay develops part of the parish. It was here that William the Conqueror made the landing in his intrusion of England in 1066 after crossing the English Channel from Normandy, France. In 1207 the community was granted a royal charter by King John as well as was controlled by Pevensey Corporation. With the decline in the town’s importance by the 19th century, the Corporation was eventually liquified in 1886 as well as the community lost its borough standing. The documents of the Corporation are held in the East Sussex Record Office at Lewes, and a voluntary body, the Pevensey Town Trust, was created to handle the property which had formerly come from the Corporation, most notably the Old Court House. Pevensey is currently a town, with a church council consisting of twelve chosen councillors. 3 councillors are chosen to the Wealden District Council to stand for Pevensey; the Member of Parliament is Hugh Merriman, who stands for the Bexhill and Battle Constituency, of which Pevensey is part.
