Each summer, the annual Henley Royal Regatta is celebrated on Henley Reach, which is a naturally straight length of the river just north of the town. It was extended synthetically. The event became ‘Royal’ in 1851, when Prince Albert emerged as patron of the regatta. The River and Rowing Museum, based in Mill Meadows, is the town’s one museum. It was established in 1998, and formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II. The museum, designed by the designer David Chipperfield, displays info on the River Thames, the sport of rowing, and the town of Henley itself.
