Bickley is a district in south east London, in the London Borough of Bromley. It is located between Elmstead and Petts Wood and is about 6 miles from London Biggin Hill Airport. Bickley has its own train station and is about 40 minutes away from St Pancras International. The name Bickley means “Bicca’s clearing” and was first recorded in 1279. The settlement of Bickley was originally a small hamlet called Cross in Hand. In the mid-18th century a hunting lodge was built in the area, which was then developed into Bickley Hall by the owner John Wells. An estate was built during the 1800s, and the area was soon full of big houses with large gardens. In the 20th century many of these houses were renovated and replaced with smaller houses. Today Bickley has a range of expensive and desirable houses and flats. Bickley has many green spaces. Jubilee Country Park is 25 hectares of ancient woodland and wildflower meadows. A cycle route and a footpath run through the park. Other green spaces in the area are Whitehall Recreation Ground and Widmore Recreation Ground. Both are in residential areas and have children’s playgrounds. There are many schools in Bickley, three of which are independent. Two of these are preparatory schools and one is a high school. There are also three churches in the area: St George’s, St Augustine’s and Southborough Lane Baptist Church. Bickley has several famous past and present residents, including the singer/songwriter Pixie Lott and the architect Ernest Newton.
