Blackfriars is a district in central London, in the south-west corner of the City of London. It is on the north bank of the Thames and is about 10 minutes away from St Pancras International. Blackfriars has its own train and tube station and is on the Circle and District lines. The name Blackfriars was first recorded in 1317. “Friars” derives from the French word “freres”, and the name refers to a local priory of Dominican monks who traditionally wear black capes. The priory was closed in 1538 during Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries. Blackfriars is known for being the former site of the Blackfriars Theatre. This was located over the river from Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, and the two were in direct competition. Blackfriars Theatre was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. Blackfriars is home and close to many famous landmarks. The most famous of these is St Paul’s Cathedral. This was built in the late 1600s and early 1700s as part of reparation after the Great Fire of London. It was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and is dedicated to Paul the Apostle. The oldest parts of Blackfriars are popular filming locations. Many modern films have been shot in the area, including Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and Adrian Hodges’ David Copperfield.
