Brentford is an area in west London, in the Borough of Hounslow. It is between Osterley and Chiswick, and south of Ealing. Brentford has its own train station and is about 30 minutes away from Waterloo train station. The M4 runs through the area, and Brentford is about 20 minutes away from Heathrow Airport. The name Brentford was first recorded as Breguntford in 705, and means “ford over the River Brent”. Brentford is an old settlement that predates the Roman occupation of Britain. From 1855 to 1859 Brentford Dock was built by the Great Western and Brentford Railway Company. Here, goods could be transported between the railway network and Thames barges. The dock processed goods including coal, steel, timber and wood pulp until it closed in 1964. The dock was then redeveloped into housing and a marina by the Greater London Council. Brentford has several landmarks. One of these is the Syon estate, which is a large mansion and park belonging to the Duke of Northumberland. The estate is over 600 years old, but it was redesigned by the designers Robert Adam and Lancelot “Capability” Brown from 1762-9. The Syon estate is now open to the public, and has a hotel, visitors centre and garden centre. Another Brentford landmark is the Brentford Monument. This stands outside the County Court, at the junction between Brentford High Street and Alexandra Road. It was designed to commemorate four events in Brentford’s history: Julius Caesar’s crossing of the Thames in 54 BC, the council of Brentford by King Offa in 781, and the two Battles of Brentford.
