It triggered an increase in population and a rise of industrial, commercial and residential buildings in the area. The area still has many well-preserved Georgian buildings, as well as other twentieth century housing. Camberwell has a thriving arts scene. It has a number of art galleries, including the South London Art Gallery. It is also home to the Blue Elephant Theatre, which puts on drama, comedy and literary performances. Camberwell hosts an Arts Festival, which takes place every summer. This has been running since 1994, and features the work of a range of local artists. Camberwell has plenty of green spaces. These include Burgess Park, Myatt’s Fields and Ruskin Park. Burgess Park is Southwark’s largest park, and hosts a parkrun every Saturday. Myatt’s Fields is in west Camberwell, and has a cafe, a playground, tennis courts and a football pitch. Ruskin Park is community run, and has a playground, a paddling pool, and a basketball court.
